fundraiser is today

West Valley Hospital Auxiliary is hosting a designer jewelry and handbag sale today (Wednesday, Sept. 29) from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The sale takes place in the conference room by the front hospital lobby, located at 525 SE Washington St., Dallas. It will feature the Miche Bag line of designer handbags as well as Cookie Lee jewelry.

Twenty percent of the sale proceeds benefit the West Valley Hospital Auxiliary's Scholarship Fund.

Opening reception

planned for exhibit

An opening reception for Donovan's Widmer's "Would That Be True" is planned today (Wednesday, Sept. 29) from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Dan and Gail Cannon Gallery of Art.

The gallery is located on the Western Oregon University campus, 345 N. Monmouth Ave., Monmouth.

The exhibit will be on display through Oct. 29. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Market schedules

final day of 2010

The inaugural season of the Polk County Bounty Market will come to a close Thursday, Sept. 30, as the market hosts its final session of 2010 from 3 to 7 p.m.

An assortment of local produce, berries, bread, spices, meat, chocolate, goodies, crafts and more are expected to be available for sale on the Polk County Courthouse lawn.

As a convenience to its customers, market vendors have positioned themselves to face out toward the sidewalk in the event of rain.

Library sets annual

youth RC car rally

Independence Public Library will host its fifth-annual Remote Control Car Rally on Saturday, Oct. 2, beginning at 2 p.m.

Children of all ages are welcome to bring their remote control vehicles to the library parking lot, 175 Monmouth St., Independence, to try out the racetrack and obstacle courses.

Loaner cars are available to share. There will be a drawing for the loaner cars at the end of the program.

The library's parking lot will be closed during the event.

Saturday fundrasier

Mid-Valley Christian Academy in Monmouth will host a car wash fundraiser Saturday, Oct. 2, in Dallas and Monmouth.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Dairy Queen restaurant in Monmouth and Les Schwab Tire Center in Dallas.

Proceeds will go toward the purchase of new playground equipment at the school.

Flea market on tap

for this weekend

Rickreall Grange Hall will hold a flea market fundraiser Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 2-3, at 280 Main St. (Highway 99W) in Rickreall.

Sale hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

Vendor tables will feature die-cast toys, tools, quilts, craft items, glassware, and other miscellaneous items.

A portion of the proceeds benefit the grange general fund and are used to purchase materials and supplies for community service projects.

A breakfast special will be available each day for $5.

Sunday breakfast

Buell Grange will host a community breakfast from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 3.

Cost is $5 per person. The all-you-can eat menu includes hotcakes, sausage, eggs and french toast. Coffee is free.

The event is a fundraiser, with proceeds going toward the maintance of the Buell Grange Hall, located at 5970 Mill Creek Road, just off Highway 22 northwest of Dallas.

Life story writing

workshops resume

The monthly life story writing workshop, "Write It Before You Lose It," resumes regular meetings beginning Monday, Oct. 4, from 12:45 to 3 p.m. at Independence Public Library, 175 Monmouth St.

The workshop provides writing ideas, encouragement and information on how to capture those lifetime memories in words to share with family and friends.

Attendees should bring a notebook and pen.

Workshop on living

healthy to be offered

A six-week workshop, "Living a Healthy Life With Chronic Conditions," will be presented at the Monmouth Senior Center beginning Tuesday, Oct. 5.

The course will cover self-management of heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, asthma, bronchitis, emphysema and other chronic conditions weekly from 1 to 3 p.m.

Instructor is Diana Tweet. The class is free and includes a book and CD. Preregistration is required.

Pentacle schedules

auditions for play

Appointments are being scheduled for auditions for Pentacle Theatre's production of "The Sound of Music."

Auditions will be held evenings on Oct. 7-8, with callbacks slated for Oct. 9.

All auditions will be at the Pentacle rehearsal space, 145 Liberty St. SE, Salem. The theater is located in West Salem and the production runs Jan. 7-9, 2011.

Bambinos benefit

Tickets are on sale for a gourmet dessert and silent auction fundraiser to benefit Bambinos, a nonprofit outreach ministry that serves low-income families with children in Dallas.

The event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 9, at 6:30 p.m. at The Majestic, 976 Main St., Dallas. Tickets are $5 or any size package of diapers admits two adults. The admission includes dessert and beverages.

Scrapbooking event

looms next month

The Polk County Association of Realtors is holding its semiannual scrapbooking and vendor fair fundraiser Sunday, Oct. 10, at LaCreole Middle School, 701 SE LaCreole Drive, in Dallas.

All proceeds will go to the Developmental Learning Center for mentally and physically handicapped youth.

The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Admission is $20 to scrap all day, which includes pizza, ice cream, soda and water. Vendors will also be setting up booths during the event.
