DALLAS -- The owner of Dallas' newest bar, Sweeney's Pub, located between Mira Mar restaurant and Anytime Fitness on East Ellendale Avenue, is also the owner of one of the oldest.
Salem resident Thomas Kuhlman took over ownership of downtown Dallas bar Tony's in October, looking for an investment opportunity to supplement his income from his construction business.
With family living in Dallas, he decided to purchase a business in the area. Kuhlman said Tony's, an old logger hangout, is the oldest bar in town.
Since taking over the downtown bar, Kuhlman said he has cleaned, remodeled and added hard alcohol, making the establishment a full bar.
Charmed by the community he had gotten to know over the last several months, Kuhlman decided to open a second bar.
"Once we got here and met the people we were dealing with, we found out what a great town it is and wanted to be part of it," he said last week.
Kuhlman wanted a location in another part of town and chose the north Dallas spot for Sweeney's for its proximity to busy East Ellendale, hoping for visibility in the high traffic area.
Sweeney's officially opened on March 1 and features a full bar and varied menu of cold sandwiches, burgers and appetizers.
Kuhlman will be installing lottery machines in the coming weeks and holding a grand opening at Sweeney's soon.
