WEST SALEM -- Eight apartments were damaged and 18 people were displaced when a fire erupted at a West Salem apartment complex Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 2.

Firefighters from the Salem and Keizer fire departments responded to the Spring Mountain Apartments in the 600 block of Taybin Road Northwest to a report of a fire. The blaze was called in at about 12:20 p.m., said Laird Case, deputy fire marshal with the Salem Fire Department.

Case said investigators have listed the cause as undetermined, but suspect the source of the fire may have been a discarded cigarette or cigar.

The apartments were inhabitable Aug. 2, with two sustaining heavy fire damage and the rest having fire, smoke and water damage. Firefighters had to cut power to the building while battling the blaze.

The Red cross assisted with finding shelter for all of the occupants, Case said.
