DALLAS -- Dallas Rotary Club and several other member clubs throughout the state joined with the Downtown Salem Rotary Club to donate $30,000 to construct wells in an area of Haiti still reeling from the earthquake in 2010.

The Haiti Well Project involves the construction of three wells in the area of Hinche, Haiti, located 75 miles from Port-au-Prince.

After completion, the wells will provide sanitary water for drinking and gardening for 17,000 people, said Cynthia Witham, Salem Rotary member and project coordinator.

In a press release, Witham said the endeavor was inspired by her granddaughter, who was adopted six years ago from Haiti.

A contingent from Salem Rotary will eventually travel to Hinche to see the finished product, Witham said.
