INDEPENDENCE -- Independence Police are seeking tips in finding those responsible for tagging incidents in early January.
Two buildings in Central Plaza were vandalized with graffiti on New Year's Eve. One tag spans nearly the entire east wall of the Figaro's and Helping Achieve Lifelong Objectives building.
On Jan. 5, that same image was crossed out with a different tag. Police also received reports of a vandalized industrial building at the intersection of 10th and F streets.
Officer Tino Banuelos said the New Year's Eve
vandalism is not believed to be gang-related. But the subsequent crossing out of that tag, and the 10th and F streets graffiti are gang-related and connected.
Independence Police have requested that the Itemizer-Observer not publish the name of the gang and what the original graffiti entailed.
Community members who discover or have had property damaged by graffiti are encouraged to immediately contact the Independence Police Department at 503-838-1214.
And "if a person is a victim of graffiti, as much of annoyance as it is, please remove it as soon as possible," Banuelos said. "Once a location is tagged, vandals will be that much more likely to hit it again."
