MONMOUTH -- You might want to clear your calendars for Aug. 3 and 10, at least in Mark Fancey's opinion.
That's when Jujana, an Afro-beat band, and Philly's Phunkestra are slated to perform, respectively, at Main Street Park.
"I'm already referring to that as the funkiest two weeks in Monmouth's history," said Fancey, the city's community development director and a coordinator for the Monmouth Music in the Park Series.
The music schedule for the rest of the summer? Well, that's pretty good, too.
The Monmouth Business Association (MBA) and the city are presenting the popular series, which runs every Wednesday at the northeast corner of the park, the future site of a city amphitheater. All shows, which range from Celtic rock to reggae, begin at 6:30 p.m.
Like last year, Main Street Pub & Eatery will host a beer and wine garden.
Fancey said he and others are attempting a low-cost version of Western Oregon University's Smith Fine Arts Series, in that planners are trying to bring in a variety of music that sets it apart from other small community concerts.
"It's one advantage of having Salem and Portland nearby," Fancey said. "We can draw from many different genres. We're bringing in forms people haven't really heard before."
And local residents have warmed to it. Three hundred people showed up last year for Everyday Prophets, a Portland reggae band that returns this month on July 20.
The series helps liven up downtown, Fancey said.
"There's a farmers market that runs into the evening, we have a lot of cars and activity, and all of that is good," Fancey said. "People know that our businesses are here."
The first concert of the season features the Ty Curtis Band this (Wednesday, July 6) evening. The series will conclude with HomeGrown Old Time on Aug. 31.
