POLK COUNTY -- Local residents will be able to make a statement against crime and have fun doing so in several neighborhoods throughout Polk County as part of National Night Out on Tuesday, Aug. 2.

The event, sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, traditionally invites citizens, law enforcement and civic officials to organize block parties and celebrations in their communities.

The goals are promoting neighborhood spirit, heightening awareness for crime and drug prevention, and strengthening participation in anticrime activities and police-community partnerships, said Monmouth Police Chief Darrell Tallan.

The 2010 National Night Out campaign involved more than 37 million people and 15,000 communities in all 50 states, as well as Canadian cities and U.S. military bases.

Dallas police officers, city officials and members of the Polk Citizens Emergency Response Team will visit each location. Start time for the celebrations is 5:30 p.m.
