DALLAS -- Police arrested two men on Wednesday, June 1, in connection with several gas thefts and residential burglaries in Dallas.
At approximately 5:30 a.m. on June 1, Dallas officers received a report of someone stealing gas from vehicles parked on Southeast Olive Street in Dallas.
The caller reported seeing someone walk down the street with a gas can and eventually leave in a pickup truck. The witness gave police a description of the truck, its license plate number and direction of travel.
Soon a Monmouth police officer spotted the vehicle and stopped it. The driver, Justin B. Dowell, 29, of Falls City, admitted he stole the gas and was arrested on two counts of third-degree theft and third-degree criminal mischief. Dowell released his Nissan pickup to his passenger, Randy G. Tarkinton, 24, of Salem, who had not been charged with a crime at the time.
Later that morning, police received a report of a residential burglary and car break-ins on Southeast Olive Street in the same area as the gas thefts. Police contacted Tarkinton at his home in West Salem to speak with him about the burglary and thefts. During the interview, police spotted items in Dowell's pickup reported stolen from the residences on Olive Street.
Officers arrested Tarkinton on a charge of possession of stolen property. Dowell was also charged with first-degree burglary and two counts of unlawful entry of a vehicle and second-degree theft.
Dowell remained at Polk County Jail on $117,000 bail. Tarkinton also was in custody on $15,000 bail.
