Western hands out spring sports awards

Athletes in baseball, softball and track & field are honored.

MONMOUTH -- Western Oregon's Daniel Dillard, Jessica Hallmark, Amanda Schumaker, Will Crook and Jason Slowey have been selected as the school's Marquis Spas Athletes of the Year for the spring sports season.

Dillard was the 2011 Great Northwest Athletic Conference player of the year in baseball. He led the league with 10 home runs and 55 runs batted in. Dillard helped the Wolves win their 10th straight GNAC championship, hitting .318 with a .554 slugging percentage and 108 total bases. He finished his career at Western with 26 home runs.

Schumaker earned her second straight All-American honor in the javelin this season at the NCAA Division II Track & Field Championships. She placed eighth at the 2011 Nationals with a throw of 137 feet, 10 inches.

Crook captured the first All-American honor of his career with a javelin throw of 196-3 at the NCAA Championships. He also helped the Western men win the GNAC title by taking first in the javelin with a toss of 196-1.

Slowey won four straight league titles in the shot put. He won the indoor and outdoor titles in the event this past season and led the Wolves in scoring in the outdoor league meet with 24 points.

Hallmark was a first team All-GNAC selection for the softball team. She batted .339 with 15 home runs and 31 runs driven in. She owns the GNAC record for career home runs with 45.

She leaves Western as the school's all-time leader in career runs batted in, as well as the single-season home run (15) and RBI (39) records.

This is the fifth year that Marquis Spas has sponsored the Athlete of the Year program.
