Chemeketa Announces $5 A Credit Tuition Hike

SALEM -- The Chemeketa Community College Board of Education unanimously approved a tuition increase for Oregon college students at its monthly meeting Tuesday, Feb. 22.

SALEM -- The Chemeketa Community College Board of Education unanimously approved a tuition increase for Oregon college students at its monthly meeting Tuesday, Feb. 22.

Tuition will increase $5 per credit hour, rising from $72 to $77 for in-state residents. The board also approved a $1 increase to the universal fee, changing it from $9 to $10 per credit hour.

The increases are effective summer term 2011.

Each year the college reviews student tuition as part of the budget development process. During this process, Chemeketa administration strives to keep student costs in the middle third of all community colleges, said Emily DuPlessis, public affairs manager for the school. The approved increase is within that range.

Chemeketa students hosted and promoted a tuition forum on campus to overtly discuss the tuition hike.

DuPlessis said students recognized that funding for Chemeketa is becoming more reliant on income from tuition and supports tuition increases as balanced by the Board of Education with careful consideration for both student access and student success.
