MONMOUTH -- A Monmouth man was arrested after crashing his car into a power pole on Friday, March 4, according to police.

The incident took place in the 800 block of North Monmouth Avenue at about 1 a.m., Sgt. Kim Dorn said.

Jonathan Young, 21, had been driving too fast when he neared the Whitesell Street intersection, lost control, and collided with a Monmouth Power and Light utility pole, Dorn said.

Young got out of his vehicle, then walked back to his residence, she said.

"He said he was scared, so he left," Dorn said, noting that alcohol did not play a part in the accident.

The impact didn't topple the power pole, but did cause enough damage that MP&L had to replace it -- at a cost of about $2,500.

Young was charged with criminal mischief and failing to perform the duties of a driver in a hit and run accident.
