POLK COUNTY -- A shooting death south of Monmouth last week appears to have been self-inflicted, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.

Authorities responded to a report of a man who had been shot at about 9:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18, in the 7800 block of Zumwalt Road.

Deputies arrived to find Jared Orosco, 30, dead from a gunshot wound to his head. Jared's brother, Brandon Orosco, who was visiting from Eugene, was home at the time and immediately called 9-1-1 to report the incident, said Sgt. Tyrone Jenkins.

"I'm not going to say whether it was a sucide or if it was an accident," Jenkins said, noting the weapon used was a .22 caliber pistol. "But on the surface, it appears to be self-inflicted."

Jenkins said deputies were on scene gathering evidence and conducting interviews for several hours. The death is still under investigation, with an autopsy scheduled this week.
