INDEPENDENCE -- Central's boys soccer team earned its first Oregon West Conference win of the season Sept. 29 by beating Taft 1-0 in Lincoln City.
Jesus Vera scored the game's only goal in the 28th minute, drilling a rebound past the Taft goaltender.
"They only had three shots the entire game," Central coach Mike Lynch said. "We controlled the ball probably 80 percent of the time. They just kind of packed it in on defense. We were banging the ball off their defenders and off their keeper the whole game."
Cascade of Turner scored twice in the game's first 17 minutes and went on to win 3-0 Sept. 29 at Panther Stadium.
"We controlled the ball a large percentage of the time," Lynch said. "They just got a couple of quick through balls on us and capitalized on them."
The Panthers (4-3 overall, 1-2 OWC) next will visit Newport for a 4 p.m. contest on Thursday, Oct. 6.
"We've been working on some of our shortcomings," said Lynch, who credited team captains Salvador Allison and Raymundo DeLa Torre for their strong leadership. "We've been working on winning balls in the air, making passes to the feet, making runs into space, shooting and team confidence. You have to have a little swagger to win the tough games. We're working on that. It is improving."
