DALLAS -- A 12-year-old Rickreall boy reported missing on Thursday, Oct. 6, was found on the afternoon of Friday, Oct. 7, at the Safeway in Dallas.
Polk County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Tyrone Jenkins said the boy had been attempting to shoplift food at the store when Safeway employees spotted him.
The employee recognized him as the boy sheriff's deputies were searching for and called police.
Safeway has decided not to press charges against the boy on the shoplifting incident.
Jenkins said the boy and three of his siblings were then taken into protective custody by the Department of Human Services. Jenkins didn't know the circumstance leading to removing the children from their home or the reason the boy decided to run away.
The boy was report as a runaway on Thursday morning and had been last seen that afternoon at the intersection of Highway 99W and Rickreall Road.
The sheriff's office initiated a search at about midnight Friday in the Rickreall area, but had called off the search by the time Safeway employees contacted police.
Jenkins said the boy rode a bike into Dallas on Thursday and may have spent the night with a friend he met in a Dallas park that day.
