First-year coach optimistic about season

Central boys soccer preview

Central boys soccer team has its third different coach in as many seasons as Mike Lynch has taken over the program.

INDEPENDENCE -- First-year Central boys soccer coach Mike Lynch understandably still has a few questions yet to be answered. But he's unquestionably optimistic about his team's potential entering the 2011 season.

"We have some quality seniors," said Lynch, the Panthers' third head coach in the past three seasons. "We have a lot of young talent. The seniors are doing a good job bringing them along to the standards of Central soccer.

"I don't want to make any predictions about the league, but I think we're going to compete. I think we're going to do well."

Lynch indicated the team had six to eight returnees from last year's club, which finished second in the Oregon West Conference and advanced to the 4A state quarterfinals before losing 2-0 at Madras.

Lynch declined to name any of his players as he is trying to promote a team-first atmosphere.

"With the way it's looking in practice, I don't think we'll have any one superstar," he said. "I think we'll all do really well. This group of young men plays as a team. The philosophy that we've instilled is that we win as a team, we lose as a team. It's about team play."

If Lynch has his way, Central soccer games will be filled with talking and nonstop motion.

"The things we need to do to be successful are communicate and keep moving on the field," he said. "There will be no standing around. We need to keep the ball moving and take shots early and often. Basically, we want to get everyone involved.

"The goal is, as soon as we step on the field, we compete. Obviously, everybody wants that banner at the end of the year. But, win or lose, we'll compete with every team we step on the pitch with."
