DALLAS -- Patrons of Dallas Public Library can make overdue book charges disappear between April 10-21 by helping hungry community members.

The library is accepting a variety of food items as part of its "Food for Fines" program. Each item brought in is worth $1 off your total library fine.

Accepted food includes: canned fruit and vegetables, chili, bottled or canned fruit juice, pasta, pasta sauce, peanut butter, canned meats and cooking oil. Five-pound bags of sugar, flour and rice are also needed.

All items must be commercially processed, be free of dents and rust, and have an expiration date. The program doesn't apply to special fees and charges for lost library materials.

People who don't have fines may also donate food.
