WEST SALEM -- A Salem man died Sunday evening in a boating accident on the Willamette River less than a mile up river from Wallace Marine Park.
At about 7:45 p.m., the Polk County Marine Patrol unit was notified of a boating accident near Wallace Marine Park involving a person being towed on an innertube behind a Honda personal watercraft.
According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, the personal watercraft operator, Alejandro Salinas, 32, was towing his brother, Enrique Salinas, 38, when they made a wide turn to head back toward Wallace Marine Park. The turn was too wide and ended up swinging the innertube Enrique was riding upon the rip-rap rocks on the west side of the river.
Alejandro had an observer on board, Geraldo Naba-Murillo, 37, who witnessed the accident and told him to stop. Alejandro assisted his brother while Geraldo rode back to Wallace Marine Park, where he notified deputies Chris Brodniak and Eric Berry, who were on patrol in the area.
Upon arrival, the deputies determined the crash was serious and transported Alejandro and Enrique back to Wallace Marine Park to meet medics.
Enrique Salinas was pronounced dead after arriving at the park. His family, including his wife, were notified on the scene.
The boat ramp at Wallace Marine Park was closed for about three hours while an investigation took place.
