MONMOUTH -- A Dallas man was arrested after a vehicle and foot chase ended in a 3 1/2 hour standoff with police officers atop a roof in a south Monmouth neighborhood on Friday.
At one point, law enforcement officers turned a fire hose on Derek Stephen Bumgardner, 31, in an effort to get him to come down, said Monmouth Sgt. Kim Dorn.
"The hose was on low pressure," Dorn said. "In no way did we want him to fall off."
Bumgardner was taken into custody at about 7:45 a.m. on Friday and transported to Salem Hospital to check for injury or hypothermia.
He was charged with attempting to elude a police officer, criminal mischief, trespassing, disorderly conducting and driving under the influence of intoxicants, among other crimes.
The incident began at 2 a.m., when a homeowner in the 8600 block of Helmick Road called to report a suspicious vehicle. Monmouth Police located the vehicle, driven by Bumgardner, and attempted to stop him, Dorn said.
He fled onto Highway 99W, turned on Madrona Street and eventually ended up crashing in the yard of a home at the intersection of Edwards Road and Ballard Drive.
Bumgardner then fled on foot for a block, and managed to climb onto the roof of a one-story home in the 400 block of Edwards Road, Dorn said.
