College Notebook: Leigh Anne MacCarthy excels with Eastern Oregon volleyball team

With roundups on more local college athletes

Leigh Anne MacCarthy of Monmouth recently completed her junior season with the Eastern Oregon University volleyball team by being named a 2011 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete.

Athletes are nominated for the honor by their head coach and must maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale and have achieved junior academic status in order qualify.

MacCarthy, a 2009 graduate of Central High School, is a 5-foot-5 libero/defensive specialist for the Mountaineers of La Grande. She played in 27 of EOU's 28 matches this past season as the Mountaineers went 15-3 in the Cascade Conference and 17-11 overall.



Cody Jones of Dallas is a member of the 2011-12 wrestling team at Southern Oregon University in Ashland. Jones, a redshirt freshman, has an 8-6 record this season competing at 165 pounds for the Raiders. He is a 2010 graduate of Dallas High School.



Four Polk County residents are among the players listed on the roster of the 2011-12 women's basketball team at Chemeketa Community College in Salem. The Storm roster includes: Marissa Angulo, a 5-foot-5 sophomore guard from Dallas averaging 2.6 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game; Kayla Cuellar, a 5-6 freshman guard from Independence averaging 2.4 points, 3.2 rebounds and 1.0 blocked shots; Hannah Frederick, a 5-6 freshman guard from Dallas averaging 6.6 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists; and Janelle Weiss, a 5-5 sophomore guard from West Salem averaging 12.1 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.3 assists.



Jesse Pratt of Monmouth is a member of the 2011-12 men's basketball team at Chemeketa Community College in Salem. Pratt, a 2010 graduate of Central High School, is a 6-foot-6 sophomore forward for the Storm. He is averaging 4.7 points and 3.0 rebounds per game in limited action.



Jordan Pratt of Monmouth was a member of the 2011 Stanford University football team that completed its season Jan. 2 with a 41-38 overtime loss to Oklahoma State in the Fiesta Bowl. Pratt is a 6-foot-3, 217-pound freshman walk-on wide receiver. He is a 2003 graduate of Central High School.
