DALLAS -- Susan Gartland, Dallas School District's director of special education, will be retiring at the end of the school year.
Gartland has been the director of special education for eight years.
A search for a new director of special education has already begun. A timeline for interviewing candidates and selecting a new director was presented to the Dallas School Board at its Jan. 9 meeting.
The district will be accepting applications until Feb. 24.
After the application deadline, Dallas Superintendent Christy Perry and a review committee will screen candidates.
The review committee will be tasked with creating a list of interview questions and attending candidate interviews. The committee will include district administrators and special education employees.
Candidate reviews will begin in March and first interviews are slated to begin April 2.
Perry said the extensive search is typical of administrative positions, but especially with special education because the new director will have to be familiar with state requirements in order to keep district schools in compliance.
The district's new special education director will be announced at the end of April.
