WELCHES -- The Polk County Itemizer-Observer was presented 14 awards during the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association 2012 Better Newspaper Contest.
Awards were handed out Thursday and Friday during the ONPA's annual Summer Publishers Convention at the Resort at the Mountain in Welches near Mount Hood.
Competing in the weekly newspaper division with circulations of more than 3,501, the Itemizer-Observer claimed four first-place honors:
* Craig Coleman for Best Coverage of Business and Economic Issues for his story headlined "Hop Harvest."
* Pete Strong for Best Headline Writing.
* Craig Coleman for Best Overall Writing.
* The I-O staff for Best Overall Website.
In addition, the Itemizer-Observer received six second-place awards: Best Feature Story, General (Jolene Guzman); Best Editorial Page (Kurt Holland); Best Lifestyle Coverage (Craig Coleman); Best News Photo (Pete Strong); Best Headline Writing (Kurt Holland); and Best Web Design (staff).
The newspaper also received four third-place awards: Best Enterprise Reporting (Craig Coleman), Best Spot News Coverage (Jolene Guzman); Best Feature Photo (Pete Strong); and Best Photo Essay (Pete Strong).
The 14 awards tied the I-O with the Lake Oswego Review for most awards in its circulation division.
Denny Smith, chairman of the board of Eagle Newspapers Inc., was inducted into the prestigious Oregon Newspaper Hall of Fame at the ONPA convention.
