MONMOUTH/INDEPENDENCE -- The current mayors of Monmouth and Independence will seek re-election in the fall.
There are also six council seats between the two cities that will be up for grabs in November.
John McArdle has officially been declared a candidate for mayor in the city of Independence. He will seek his eighth consecutive two-year term.
Independence City Recorder Karin Johnson said McArdle is the lone mayoral candidate for 2012 to date.
The Independence City Council seats currently held by Jerry Hoffman, Nancy Lodge and Forrest Peck are open this year. Johnson said all three have announced intentions to seek re-election.
In Monmouth, John Oberst said that he will attempt to win a fourth term as mayor.
"I want to get some specific things accomplished," Oberst said. "We've started them, we're not quite there yet, and I want to see them through completion."
Former Monmouth City Councilor Steve Milligan is also vying for mayor.
"I've gotten my petitions signed and turned in," Milligan said. "I want to make sure the city stays in good fiscal shape and that we maintain the quality of life we've come to enjoy."
The council seats of Chris Larsen, Kenn Lehto and Darin Silbernagel are all open. Larsen and Lehto have stated they will not run for re-election, said Phyllis Bolman, Monmouth City Recorder.
Thus far, nobody has inquired about either of those slots, Bolman added.
"That's unusual since I've been here," Bolman said. "During our last election, we had a lot of candidates."
Those interested in running for office in Monmouth or Independence must be registered voters and have lived in their respective city for the previous 12 months.
Terms for mayors in both cities are two years, and for councilors, four years.
Prospective candidates in Independence must turn in 21 valid signatures from city voters to the city recorder's office by Aug. 28. The signature requirement in Monmouth is 27.
