Community members are welcome to a number of events around Polk County on Monday in honor of Memorial Day.

* DALLAS

There will be an "Avenue of Flags" display at Dallas Cemetery, 2065 SW Fairview Ave., beginning at 11 a.m. The event will be hosted by American Legion Post 20 and VFW Post 3203.

Warrant Officer Gary W. Carlson will be the guest speaker. Dallas High School's choir will perform. A military flyover is also scheduled.

* GRAND RONDE

Tribal Memorial Day will start with a noon luncheon at the Community Center on the Grand Ronde Tribal campus, 9615 Grand Ronde Road.

A ceremony will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at the West Valley Veterans' Memorial, opposite the community center. Reyn Leno, tribal council vice chairman, will emcee.

Nine names will be added to the black granite pillars, bringing the total number to 2,254.

Local veterans and veterans groups are welcome. The Grand Ronde Color Guard will post the colors.

* INDEPENDENCE

The 19th annual Independence State Airport Aviation Memorial will honor deceased Oregon military and civilian pilots.

The event will start at 8 a.m., beginning with a flyover of Oregon Air National Guard F-15s.

Matt Maass, state director of airports, will present a "Tribute to Pilots" honoring 18 aviators; their families will receive engraved vases and flags.

A picnic lunch will start at 11:30 a.m. There will also be a rescue helicopter demonstration by the U.S. Coast Guard. Shuttle service to the airport from the Marquis Spas parking lot along Hoffman Road will be provided.
