Novotney appointed to WESD post

SALEM -- A former leader of the Dallas School District has been appointed the interim superintendent of the Willamette Education Service District (WESD).

Dr. Dave Novotney was appointed on May 22 to the post by the WESD Board of Directors. Novotney accepted the appointment and, pending successful negotiations on the terms of his contract, will assume the responsibilities of superintendent July 1.

The appointment will be for the period of one year.

The decision to appoint an interim superintendent follows the April 24 announcement by Superintendent Pat Evenson-Brady that she will retire June 30 due to family medical responsibilities.

Novotney has been at WESD since July 2004. In addition to his current role as deputy superintendent, Novotney has served WESD as acting superintendent, assistant superintendent and director of human resources. Prior to joining WESD, he served as superintendent of the Dallas School District.

Performing arts camp scheduled

DALLAS -- Two Dallas High School theater and choir instructors will conduct a performing arts camp for students in grades 4-8 in June.

Blair Cromwell, DHS theater teacher, and Slade Thackeray, choir instructor, in association with the Dallas School District, will host the Young Artists Playtrium from June 11-15.

Students in sixth through eighth grades will meet each day from 9 a.m. to noon, while students in fourth and fifth grades will meet daily from 1 to 4 p.m. The sessions will be held in the auditorium and choir room at Dallas High School, 1250 SE Holman Ave.

Tuition is $75 for the week and registration is due at the school district office by Friday.

Baccalaureate service set Friday

DALLAS -- All high school graduates, their families and friends are welcome to celebrate a baccalaureate service Friday at 7 p.m. at Faith Evangelical Free Church.

Graduates are encouraged to wear their caps and gowns and should plan to arrive at 6:30 p.m.

The church is located at 2290 E. Ellendale Ave., Dallas.

Gathering will honor Central duo

MONMOUTH -- A retirement celebration in honor of Mary Gabaldon and Eda Alvarez will take place Monday from 3 to 4 p.m. in the library at Ash Creek Elementary School.

Gabaldon has worked 27 years in the education field, 22 years for Central School District, while Alvarez has worked 24 years as an instructional assistant for Central School District

Anyone who knows these two educators are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served.

Distinguished educator gala on tap

DALLAS -- Tickets are now on sale for the Dallas Distinguished Educator Award 2012 Gala, scheduled June 8 at 6 p.m. at Eola Hills Wine Cellars in Rickreall.

During the evening, recipients of the Distinguished Educator Award for the 2011-12 school year will be recognized for their efforts of going above and beyond the classroom to help students reach their potential.

The event at Eola Hills, 501 S. Pacific Highway (99W), includes a catered meal for $15 per person. Tickets are available at the Dallas School District office.
