DALLAS -- This will be the last summer of bond-funded renovations for the Dallas School District and it will come with an unexpected project: A new restroom and concession stand for DHS athletic fields.
Superintendent Christy Perry said team coaches see the new complex as a welcome addition. The alternative would be upgrading facilities at Gallaspy Stadium.
"They were in unanimous agreement that the concession stand/restroom facility was the way to go," Perry said.
According to estimates put together by the maintenance bond citizens advisory committee, renovating the restrooms underneath the stadium would cost about $146,000. Building a new restroom/concessions stand complex to serve all fields is estimated at $238,897.
The project will be paid for with leftover voter-approved bond funding, as all other required projects have been completed.
Perry said the advisory committee reviewed past projects to make sure everything else was finished before proceeding with the project.
With the exception of a new parking lot at Oakdale Heights Elementary School, the bond money only paid for upgrades and repairs of existing facilities, not new construction.
"They (the advisory committee members) were really anxious to be able to do something new and that the public could see," Perry said. "Parking lots and boilers aren't very visible."
District maintenance staff have yet to make a decision on whether to close existing bathrooms completely. They may be remain open during team practices, but otherwise wouldn't be used.
Current concession stands would also be put to other use.
The tentative location of the new facility would be between the baseball field and tennis courts.
