Monmouth resident Dave Wood's garage has been transformed into Frankenstein's laboratory for Halloween, carrying on a tradition. Each year Wood sets up an elaborate display that takes over the home's yard and garage, last year's theme was zombies, this year's features Dracula, mummies and other "classic" monsters.

* Airlie Hills Farm Harvest Festival and Pumpkin Patch

-- Open daily through Wednesday, Oct. 31, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays, 10720 Airlie Road, Monmouth. Features hay rides, a newly designed hay maze, farm animals, pedal carts and a 5-acre owl-themed corn maze. Sausage dogs, kettle corn, and other food or beverages are available for purchase. Setniker Farms Pumpkin Patch

-- Open daily through Wednesday, Oct. 31. Sunday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., 6410 Poplar Lane, Independence. Admission is free, but there are costs for some activities and attractions. Fun stuff includes: A small and large corn maze, hay rides, hay pyramids, indoor slides and corn pit. Activities are free for those 2 and under. The popular "haunted" corn maze takes place 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Cost is $7 per person. Concessions are available on the weekend. Mayhem at the Majestic

Monmouth Public Library Pumpkin Carving Contest

* Monmouth Farmers/Vendors Market Costume Contest

-- Wednesday, Oct. 31, noon to 6 p.m., Monmouth Farmers/Vendor Market, 152 N. Warren St., Monmouth. Halloween costume contest with prizes, games, treats and refreshments. Costume contest categories include: scariest, funniest, most authentic, most creative, judges favorite, and male and female favorite in pets (any type of pet). Judges will be market vendors. MICAA Halloween Spectacular

-- Wednesday, Oct. 31, 4 to 7 p.m. Downtown businesses in Monmouth and Independence host their second "Halloween Spectacular." Many Main Street businesses in both communities will hand out candy to trick-or-treaters. The Monmouth-Independence Community Arts Association will provide canvas treat bags for kids in costume. The cities' public libraries will host games and chalk art activities for children. Festival food and refreshments will be available for sale by Partnerships in Community Living. -- Wednesday, Oct. 31, 6 to 7:30 p.m., Dallas Retirement Village, 311 W. Ellendale Ave., 377 NW Jasper St. and 340 NW Brentwood St., Dallas. Preschool through grade-school children are welcome with their parents. The entry area of each building will have residents looking forward to giving treats out to children.
