Dallas plans leaf pickups

DALLAS -- The city of Dallas will begin its leaf collection service this week.

DALLAS -- The city of Dallas will begin its leaf collection service this week.

Leaves can be placed in the street beginning Thursday and continuing through Dec. 15. However, residents should check the city's website, www.ci.dallas.or.us, for pickup dates in their area of the city before putting out their leaves in the street. Notice will be given two weeks in advance.

City crews will be by each area two or three times to pick leaves up.

Prior to pickup, leaves should be raked into the street in small piles about 18 inches from the curb to avoid blocking the roadway, clogging storm drains or preventing water from flowing into drains. City equipment can only pick up leaves, not trimmings, brush, grass or other yard debris.

City officials also recommend placing leaves in yard debris bins to be picked up with regular garbage service.

They also can be dropped off at the following locations through Dec. 31:

* The gravel lot west of the ball fields at Lyle Elementary School.

* The parking lot at Dallas City Park at the end of Allgood Street.

* The far east end of Hankel Street in front of the barricade.

City officials ask residents not to rake leaves into the street outside the times pickup crews are collecting them as they can clog gutters and storm drains and drift onto neighboring properties.

Extra leaves are available to the public. Leaves can be picked up at the three drop-off sites or arrangements can be made with Dallas Public Works to deliver large quantities.
