DALLAS -- A Dallas resident was killed and another was taken to the hospital early Saturday morning following a single-vehicle crash near Southeast Fir Villa Road.
According to an Oregon State Police (OSP) press release, at about 1 a.m. Saturday Byron E. Moore, 24, of Dallas was driving a 1999 Chevrolet pickup east on Highway 223 (Ellendale Avenue) near Southeast Fir Villa Road when it drifted onto the shoulder of the road.
Police said Moore lost control of the pickup as it went into a ditch. It then launched into the air and land in the frontyard of a residence.
Moore's passenger, Mitchell B. Johnson, 24, of Dallas was ejected from the truck and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said he was not wearing a seat belt.
OSP is continuing the investigation into the accident, however police did day alcohol is believed to be a factor.
OSP Lt. Gregg Hastings said a decision about whether charges will be filed will be made at the end of the investigation.
Moore received nonlife-threatening injuries and was taken to Salem Hospital for treatment. He was released Monday.
Polk County Sheriff's Office, Dallas Police Department, Dallas Fire Department and ODOT assisted at the scene.
