Master Gardeners

meet Wednesday

OSU Extension Service Polk County Master Gardeners will hold its February chapter meeting Wednesday (today) at 7 p.m.

The meeting will take place in the Arts and Crafts Building at the Polk County Fairgrounds and Event Center, 520 S. Pacific Highway (99W), Rickreall. It is free and open to the public.

Among the topics will be a presentation and discussion on a 14-acre demonstration garden site recently granted to the group by the city of Independence. This meeting will give an overview of the site, the vision for 2013, work and financial needs, and will provide a work calendar for the master gardener volunteers to begin work.

Memorial service

program available

Dallas Alliance Church is offering a memorial service Thursday on Valentine's Day for those individuals who have been widowed.

The 11 a.m. event is an opportunity to listen to music of hope, have the name of their spouse read publicly, participate in memory activities, and worship together with other grieving individuals.

The event is free and anyone is welcome to attend regardless of their church affiliation.

Ice cream social

on tap Thursday

West Valley Hospital Volunteer Services are hosting a Valentine's ice cream social Thursday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the hospital cafe.

You can buy a $1 Valentine's Day card Wednesday (today) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the group's See's Candies sale in the front lobby of the hospital and redeem it for a made-to-order ice cream sundae on Thursday.

Proceeds benefit the Volunteer Services Scholarship Fund.

The hospital is located at 525 SE Washington St., Dallas.

Valentine's event

New Hope Community Outreach Center is hosting a free Valentine's Day luncheon party Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The public is welcome.

There will be music, a buffet lunch and Valentine treat bags will go home with all who come to the festivities. Handmade Valentines will also be available. Donations are appreciated. Guests are welcome to bring a potluck dish if they like, but it is not required.

Electronics swap

meet set Saturday

The Salem Repeater Association will host its 32nd annual Salem Hamfair computer and electronics swap meet Saturday at the Polk County Fairgrounds and Event Center, 520 S. Pacific Highway (99W), Rickreall.

The event runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $8, with children 12 and under free with a paying adult.

There will be several types of electronics gear, particularly amateur (ham) radio and short wave listening radios, available. A raffle will also be held, with the drawing taking place at 2:30 p.m.

Old time fiddlers

to play at grange

The Oregon Old Time Fiddlers will perform at a Valentine's-themed event Saturday from noon to 3:30 p.m. at the Oak Grove Grange Hall.

Everyone including couples and families are welcome. Dancing is encouraged. The event will include a light appetizer tray and a flute of sparkling cider with seating at tables of four to the first 50 guests to arrive. Additional desserts and beverages can be purchased.

Admission is $5 per person or $15 per family.

The grange hall is located at 2700 Oak Grove Road in Rickreall.

Pianist performing

Saturday in Dallas

Award-winning pianist John Nilsen will perform on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Dallas United Methodist Church.

The free afternoon concert will feature a variety of styles of music including his own compositions. A donation of support offering will be taken.

Sunday brunch

First Baptist Church of Dallas will host a post-Valentine's Day brunch immediately following its Sunday services at noon.

The meal will include lasagna, salad, bread and desert.

American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Polk County teams are seeking support for through an upcoming fundraiser in Dallas.

Buy a pizza at Ugo's Pizza Parlor, 967 Main St., Dallas, Tuesday from 4 to 8:30 p.m. and support Relay For Life. The team will receive credit on eat in, take out or gift card orders; delivery is excluded.
