SUMMERFEST: Annual Dallas fun run hopes to draw crowd

DALLAS -- A few changes have not slowed what has become an annual part of Dallas' Summerfest signature community event. The Summerfest Fun Run is back for another edition and its new organizers hope to please an array of participants."What we're trying to do is figure out who we need to please -- the competitive runners like the awards and the accurate times and then there's the people who just like to do fun runs. We're trying to get everyone involved," said Trenda Locke, who takes over race director duties -- along with Dyan Tallon -- from Sandy Teal, who stepped down after 10 years at the helm. The race, set for Saturday with a start in front of the Dallas Radio Shack on Southeast Jefferson Street, will again feature a 10-kilomter and 5-kilomter run, a 5K walk and a «-mile fun run.The difference this year? The 1/2-mile fun run will be open to all ages, not just kids."We know that some people don't want to do distances, so part of it is getting more people involved," said Locke, who has directed the annual Dallas Dragon Run, held in April, for the past seven years. "If they want to run with their kids, or if they want to go out and walk the half mile, that's their choice."It's more to the effect of getting people active."Organizers also decided to go without hiring a timing company this year to help reduce costs, which will allow more funds to go directly to the Dallas Booster Club, which uses the run as a major fundraiser. The Summerfest runs will be timed this year with the same timing system used for the Dragon Run."We're going to do our own timing -- we're trying it this way to see if we can build the numbers up before we bring someone in to time it," Locke said. The route for the races will remain the same, as the 5K will travel north down Jefferson to Walnut Street, where it turns east and follows Walnut to the Dallas Aquatic Center, where you run a loop around the soccer field, and head back on Walnut across Levens Street. From there, head south on Levens to Academy and back across Main Street. The 10K course follows a similar route during its early stages, but continues eastward from the aquatic center on Barberry, then loops back via Hawthorne and Academy to LaCreole before heading west down Walnut through Dallas City Park. The 1/2-mile fun run starts on the corner of Jefferson and Washington streets and follows the Flower Power Parade route through downtown. All races finish on Main Street in front of the Polk County Courthouse.
