Summer music, movies set at amphitheater

INDEPENDENCE -- Hot summer nights, cold beer and some of the best live music in the state. To Alex Trevino, that sounds like heaven. That's why he's worked so hard to bring the River's Edge Summer Series back for its second year.Nationally recognized and regional artists will have fans dancing and singing to country, rock 'n' roll, blues and soul throughout the summer on Friday nights at Independence's Riverview Park and Amphitheater. The concert series kicks off with Portland-based Steelhorse, a Bon Jovi tribute band, on July 12. Largely playing Bon Jovi's hit songs from the 1980s, fans will be pumping their fists and singing every word."They're very high energy, a really great show," Trevino said. "They've got great vocals ... one of the most entertaining shows around."Trevino landed another featured artist for the Aug. 9 date almost on a fluke. Rising country star Michelle Murray was scheduled for a show in Portland around the same time but Trevino talked her agent into moving the show to Independence."Michelle Murray was just a blessing in disguise," Trevino said. "We worked out all the details back in the first part of April."Crowd favorites The Police Experience, The Police tribute band, will round out the featured performers for the series on Aug. 16.A huge hit last year, The Police Experience received minimal marketing yet still drew around 1,200 people, Trevino said.Trevino got a late start in the booking process compared to last year's series, partly due to the city's finances and waiting to see if the city bond measure on the May ballot was approved by voters.Trevino is currently working to secure bands to fill the July 19, Aug. 2 and Aug. 23 dates.Fans can also see Cloverdayle, country; Ants in the Kitchen, blues, soul and rock 'n roll; and Aaron Crawford, country/rock as part of Western Days July 4-6.Once again, Fiesta Mexicana will feature music, dancing, food and family fun in a multicultural celebration on August 30.The River's Edge Summer Series also features movies every Thursday night in July and August except July 4.
