Preps: Local Athletes Excel In Classroom

POLK COUNTY -- Several of Polk County's spring high school sports teams have not only been making their marks on the diamonds, tracks and courts, they've been excelling in the classroom as well.

POLK COUNTY -- Several of Polk County's spring high school sports teams have not only been making their marks on the diamonds, tracks and courts, they've been excelling in the classroom as well.

The Oregon School Activities Association and Dairy Farmers of Oregon last week announced its Spring 2013 Academic All-State top-10 teams.

The highest cumulative grade-point average for the spring belongs to the Perrydale girls track and field squad, which has a team GPA of 3.88. Central's softball team is ranked first among all Class 4A schools and fourth in the entire state with a 3.75 GPA.

Local prep teams honored by sport were:

Baseball -- Central, third, Class 4A, 3.50 GPA; Dallas, seventh, Class 5A, 3.37 GPA.

Softball -- Central, first, Class 4A, 3.75 GPA; Dallas, sixth, Class 5A, 3.59 GPA.

Girls track and field -- Perrydale, tied for second, Class 1A, 3.88 GPA; Central, third, Class 4A, 3.69 GPA.

Boys track and field -- Kings Valley Charter School/Philomath co-op, first, Class 4A, 3.59 GPA.

Girls tennis -- Central, eighth, Class 4A-3A-2A-1A, 3.72 GPA.
