Monmouth preps for leaf pickup

MONMOUTH -- Beginning Friday, Monmouth residents can pile leaves on city streets to be picked up in the city.The Monmouth Public Works Department requests that leaves be placed during the following weekend dates: Nov. 1-3, Nov. 15-17, Nov. 22-24, Nov. 29-Dec. 1, Dec. 13-15 and Dec. 27-29.As time permits, the city will pick up the leaves in the days immediately following those dates.The free leaf pickup service is provided by the city in an effort to reduce the impact of leaves on the city's stormwater system as well as rivers and wetlands.To minimize the time that leaf piles are on city streets affecting parking and drainage, place leaves out only during the days listed above.Pile your leaves in the street, leaving a minimum of one foot between the curb and the leaf pile.Leaf piles should not block the flow of storm water along the curb, cover storm catch basins or encroach on the traffic lane.Park vehicles at least 5 feet away from leaf piles to allow equipment room to safely pick up leaf piles.The city will not pick up leaf piles if they contain grass trimmings, limbs or other yard debris.Commercial landscape firms are required to collect and haul away all landscape debris.After Dec. 31 the property owner is responsible for disposal of leaves from their property.Residents who have additional yard debris are encouraged to contact Brandt's Sanitary Service Inc. at 503-838-0464.The dumping of leaves or any other yard debris on city streets is a violation of city ordinance 44.415 and could result in a citation.For more information: Monmouth Public Works Department, 503-838-2173;
