College Notebook: Local athletes in the college ranks

BOISE, Idaho - Grant Hedrick of Independence is gearing up for his junior season with the nationally-ranked Boise State University football team.Hedrick, a 2010 graduate of Central High School, is currently listed second on the depth chart at the quarterback position behind Joe Southwick for the Bronocs, who open their 2013 season Aug. 31 at Washington.The 6-foot, 202-pound Hedrick appeared in eight games last season for BSU. He completed 12-of-17 passes for 116 yards and rushed 19 times for 21 yards and three touchdowns. Hedrick also caught one pass for 20 yards.The redshirt junior is a former Oregon Class 4A player of the year for the Panthers.-Jordan Pratt of Monmouth has returned for his third season with the Stanford University football team in Stanford, Calif. The 2003 graduate of Central High School is listed as a 6-foot-3, 213-pound junior wide receiver for the Cardinal. The former professional baseball player who spent eight years in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization saw limited action last season, appearing in five games and recording one reception for two yards.-Wendy Deptula of Monmouth is back for her sophomore season with the women's cross-country team at Mary Baldwin College, an NCAA Division III school in Staunton, Va. Deptula, a 2012 graduate of Central High, received several honors during her freshman campaign with the Fighting Squirrels, including being named USA South Athletic Conference Second Team All-League and receiving the USA South MBC Sportsmanship Award and the Mary Baldwin College Rookie of the Year. Wendy Deptula -Two 2013 graduates of Central High School are continuing their soccer careers this fall at Chemeketa Community College in Salem. Veronica Lepe, a freshman from Independence, is a defender for the Storm, while Cheyenne Myers of Monmouth is a goalkeeper.-Deaven Vessell of Dallas is on the roster of the 2013 Chemeketa Community College volleyball team. Vessell, a 5-foot-9 freshman, is a 2013 graduate of Dallas High.-Miguel Escamilla of Independence is a member of the 2013 men's soccer team at Chemeketa community College. Escamilla, a 2011 graduate of Central High School, is listed as a freshman midfielder on the Storm roster.-Erin Fettig of Monmouth is a member of the George Fox University women's soccer team.
