FALLS CITY -- The day Lori Sickles and Laura Britton took over ownership of The Boondocks Bar & Grill in Falls City could have been a disaster. The fryer was broken. And The Boondocks had a steady stream of customers coming in to wish Sickles and Britton well. That's enough to make any new restaurant owner panic, but they were able to take the mishap in stride."It was good, but it was pretty hectic," Sickles said of The Boondocks' Sept. 5 reopening. "We definitely had some challenges. ... We had to come up with some different food in a hurry, but we really had an excellent day, all things considered."Business has been steady -- and relatively smooth -- since, in spite of the new owners' lack of sleep."We have been running off adrenaline for a week," Sickles said last week. The Boondocks isn't the couple's only business venture. They own rental homes, a screen printing company and a cleaning business. They also have an 8-year-old daughter, requiring at least one of them to be home each evening. So why add another business into the mix?"It was an opportunity -- and when opportunity knocks, that door only stays open for so long," Britton said. "We thought it was a good opportunity to try something different."They contemplated the move for a few months before committing to it. Once that decision was made, Sickles quit the job she held at Spirit Mountain Casino for 18 years to devote full attention to The Boondocks."I figured if we really want to make this work, we should dive into it 100 percent," Sickles said. "This is definitely different for me, going from an eight-hour-a-day job to a 20-hour-a-day job."Sickles and Britton have extended the hours, offering lunch every day and breakfast on weekends. A new menu will be launched at the grand opening on Sept. 28."Lori is a fantastic cook," Britton said. "She makes all-homemade food."The bar will soon feature lottery games and five big screens tuned to Thursday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday football games -- accompanied with plenty of wings and beer."I would like it to be more of a restaurant environment, where people can come, have a good time and enjoy themselves -- have a great meal and a cocktail or a cold beer," Britton said.
