Kirby and Cathy Frink are expanding their store in Falls City to include a separate hardware section in building next door to their original location on North Main Street.

FALLS CITY — When Kirby and Cathy Frink opened what became Frink’s General Store on North Main Street in Falls City, they envisioned it being a second-hand and hardware outlet.
Three and a half years later, it has taken a very different shape, offering groceries, made-to-order deli items, and yes — hardware.
The store has grown so much that the Frinks had to purchase a second building and move the hardware, automotive and garden supplies next door, a former restaurant, more than doubling the store’s size.
A small automotive section occupies the lobby, while hardware is stocked in the former dining room.
Kirby has been gradually setting up the second location, keeping the doors open for curious residents and customers to come in.
“I’ve been trying to keep it open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.,” he said. “I’ve had the door open while we are getting ready.”
The move will allow the grocery and deli section in the store’s other building to expand, adding “grab-and-go” deli items — mostly prepared sandwiches and salads — and an espresso machine.
“I think people will like the prepared deli foods,” Cathy Frink said. “People come, and the deli is backed up with orders and they just want to grab something quick.”
Cathy said the she and her husband were surprised by how fast they have been able to expand.
“We kind of went by what the people wanted in town,” Cathy Frink said. “They seem to be really happy with what we’ve done.”
Kirby has yet another idea in the works that will use the second story of the hardware store building: a hostel catering to mountain bike riders using the Black Rock Mountain Bike Area near Falls City.
“It’s all done up there,” he said. “We just have to furnish it. We’ve had quite a bit of interest in that.”
He said if the plan works, he might even stock mountain bike equipment and repair supplies in the store.
“That bicycle deal is getting to bigger and bigger,” he said.
