PEDEE NEWS: Arlene Kovash

I saw Cliff and Anne Bault and their son, Dawntae, 12, at the Polk County Fair on Thursday.

Dawntae told me he had entered 22 items, all in open class and mostly in foods, and had placed in 14 of them. His decorated cake and his angel food cake both received an “outstanding exhibit” ribbon and he won the “Outstanding Junior Chef” award.

I had entered the Polk County Women For Agriculture’s quilt for the group and it was the “outstanding exhibit” for the group quilt category.

The Mzungus, a Christian rock band originating in Monmouth, will perform a concert Aug. 21 at the Pedee Church outdoor amphitheater starting at 7 p.m.

I’m not much into music, but I looked them up at http://www.reverbnation.com /themzungus and they are good. Even I will be there and hope to see you, too. Bring your own chairs (although the church has some) and a blanket or warm coat just in case.

Scott and Melody Castle welcomed their new baby, Joy Harmony Castle, into the world on July 31. Big brother Liam was excited about having a new sister.

Derek Burbank, son of Dave and Suzanne Burbank, is fighting fires for the forest service this summer and is, as of this writing, on the Five Mile Fire south of Imnaha here in Oregon. It’s hard work, but he really enjoys the challenge.

Diane Telfer is a volunteer for the American Red Cross and spent much of last week helping at the evacuation center in The Dalles, when the Rowena fire west of town threatened hundreds of homes. That fire was the worst fire in the country last week, and is still burning. Nearly 660 firefighters and support staff were assigned to that fire.
