DALLAS — A Monmouth man was arrested Sunday following a head-on collision on Kings Valley Highway (Highway 223) just south of Dallas early Sunday morning.
Jose R. Flores-Torres, 23, was arrested for driving under the influence of intoxicants after causing the wreck near milepost 6.
Oregon State Police was dispatched to the scene at 5:19 a.m., said Lt. Josh Brooks, public information officer for OSP.
Flores-Torres was driving a 2005 Chevy Cobalt southbound on Highway 223 when he crossed into the northbound lanes, sideswiping a 1999 Ford Contour, Brooks said.
Flores-Torres then hit a 1988 Toyota pickup driven by Mitchel E. Calmer, 26, of Dallas head-on.
The Chevy caught fire, Brooks said. The drivers of the other two vehicles helped pull Flores-Torres and his passenger out of the Cobalt.
Flores-Torres was charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants, assault, reckless endangering of another person and reckless driving.
His passenger, whom Brooks declined to identify, sustained serious injuries and was transported to Salem Hospital.
Calmer was transported to Salem Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
This is the second serious traffic accident this year along the stretch of Kings Valley Highway near milepost 6. An accident in May resulted in the death of a Dallas man.
