Lifeguard class sign-ups available

DALLAS — Sign-ups are open for lifeguard classes at the Dallas Aquatic Center.

Participants must register for a pre-course test before Saturday. The class is open to people ages 15 and above. Participants will be expected to pay for the course in full after passing the test.

The cost is $150 with an online book and $200 with a paperback book. Bring a form of age-verifying documentation to the pre-course.

The pre-course skills test will take place on Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. The pre-course skills include 300 yards of continuous swimming, including 100 yards of freestyle, 100 yards of breaststroke and 100 yards of a combination.

Participants must also tread water with legs only for two minutes with their head above water. The final part of the skills test requires participants to swim 20 yards, surface dive 9 feet, retrieve a 10-pound brick off the bottom to the surface and swim on your back with the brick 20 yards in less than 1 minute, 40 seconds.

Classes will run Dec. 19 through Feb. 6 on Fridays from 6 to 9 p.m. A class on Sunday, Feb. 8, will also be offered from 9 a.m. to noon.
