County safety levy hearings slated

POLK COUNTY — The first two in a series of public hearings to discuss a proposed Polk County public safety levy will be held this week.

Hosted by the Polk County Board of Commissioners, meetings are scheduled Wednesday (today) at 6 p.m. at the Independence Public Library, 175 Monmouth St., Independence; and Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Polk County Fairgrounds, 520 S. Pacific Highway (99W), Rickreall.

The current proposal calls for a five-year levy that would cost 45 cents per $1,000 of assessed value on properties. It would raise an estimated $2.25 million in its first year to help support the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Polk County District Attorney’s Office and other county public safety functions.

Seven additional meetings will be held in January throughout the county, including Jan. 6 in Falls City and Jan. 8 in Grand Ronde.

Dallas city leaf collection continues

DALLAS — Fall leaf collection in Dallas resumes this weekend as Republic Services will collect fallen leaves on Saturday and Sunday.

Those who want Republic Services to gather leaves need only to rake them into the street in long rows parallel to the curb before collections begin. Rows should be at least a foot from the curb and not blocking roadways, driveways or bike lanes. Only leaves should be placed in the street — no trimmings, brush, grass or other debris.

Keep in mind it’s important not to rake leaves into city streets until just before the weekend collection. Leaves raked into the street can cause drainage and flooding problems by clogging gutters and storm sewers, and can blow onto neighboring properties.

Other options for leaf disposal include using them as mulch, placing them in yard debris bins or hauling them to the city’s drop-off locations: the parking lot adjacent to the Lyle softball fields; Southwest Allgood Street near the gate to the parks office; and the east end of Hankel Street.
