FALLS CITY — Did you miss Cinco de Mayo and don’t know where to take mom for Mother’s Day? Falls City has an event for you Saturday night: “Cinco de Mama.” The dual-themed event is from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Falls City Community Center, 320 N. Main St. And what makes the combination even better is the dinner and silent auction is a benefit for Wagner Community Library, which is once again in desperate need of funding. “We don’t have enough to cover all of May,” said Mary Hake, the temporary library director. With release of the Wagner Trust Fund — a possible longer-term funding source — tied up in a court challenge, a successful “Cinco de Mama” is necessary to keep the doors open this month. Hake said the Falls City School District has pledged to help the library stay open during the summer months for the reading program. “We know somehow we will make it through August, but we really need to step up with fundraising,” Hake said. Luckily, Cinco de Mama has a delicious Mexican food dinner planned, catered by Dallas’ El Pique Taqueria, and live music by local band Little Raven. Vegetarian, gluten-free and dairy-free menu items will be available. Up for bidding in the silent auction are three autographed books by Oregon Poet Laureate Paulann Petersen, handcrafted wooden tops and wine stoppers, a set of mag wheels, a wooden table-top carousel horse, jewelry, a digital century of National Geographic, books donated by authors, and antique books. “Hopefully, it will be a nice, fun, family evening,” Hake said.
