Communities team up for clean-up event

INDEPENDENCE — The annual Monmouth-Independence Clean-up and Beautification Day takes place Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.    A collection site for rubbish will be at Riverview Park. Residents may bring trash, wood, metal, yard debris, appliances, car batteries and tires — the first four are free — to the site for disposal. The cost is $10 for Monmouth and Independence residents and $12 for surrounding county residents.    Johnny’s Auto Wreckers and Myers Towing will pick up abandoned and junk vehicles. Umpqua Bank will provide a shred truck from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.    Elderly and disabled citizens are asked to contact the city of Independence by Thursday if they need help or pick-up assistance.    During the community cleanup, residents are encouraged to clean up their own property and contribute to the general community cleanup efforts. Those volunteering to clean up around town will have lunch provided for them.    For more information or to volunteer: Sgt. Lyle Gilbert, Independence Police Department, 503-838-1214; register under Project Oregon on the SOLV website www.solv.org. To arrange for towing of abandoned and junk vehicles: Johnny’s at 503-838-0060 or Myers at 503-838-0306.
