Popular Dallas goat dairy to change business focus

DALLAS — Fairview Farm is moving from milk to mohair.    The goat dairy on Fairview Avenue in Dallas is closing its dairy and selling its milk goat herd in exchange for a herd of angora goats, raised for their fiber.    If the decision seems sudden — the farm opened only five years ago — keep in mind the venture was supposed to be a retirement business for owners Terry and Laurie Carlson.    With an expanding herd, a creamery, a farm store and even a goat museum to run, the business just ended up being too much for the couple to keep up with. The Carlsons had two choices: Expand and hire more staff or figure out a way to downsize. They chose the latter.    “It needs to go to the next step at this point and we are not interested in going in the next step at this stage in our lives,” Laurie Carlson said.    Fiber goats — which were at one time quite the industry in Polk County as Laurie Carlson discovered in her research for opening the museum — require much less work, she said. They don’t have to be milked every day for one and, unlike milk, their wool doesn’t have an expiration date.    Plans are to close the dairy after Memorial Day weekend. The Carlsons are set to pick up their new herd of 15 angora goats this week.    They hope someone local will be interested in purchasing some of their goats and dairy equipment to pick up where they left off.    They will keep a small dairy herd, including the quintuplets born on the farm’s fifth anniversary in April. The goat museum will also stay, but will only be open occasionally.    Carlson said she and Terry have had a tough time telling their customers.    They put an announcement on their website, but have also been informing visitors at the farm store and others who buy their products.    “That is what we feel the worst about, seeing them face to face,” Laurie said, admitting there have been a few people she just couldn’t tell quite yet.    She said it’s been a fun five years, and for that the couple wants to thank their supporters.    “The community has been incredible,” she said. “We are blown away by our customers.”    Last Chance    What: Fairview Farm Goat Dairy is closing.    When: Open weekends; the last day is May 25.    Where: 2340 SW Fairview Ave., Dallas.    For more information: 503-623-4744.
