Seven WOU athletes receive award

MONMOUTH — Seven Western Oregon University student-athletes received the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Faculty Athletic Representative Scholar-Athlete award on July 16.

Senior baseball player Vince Ampi, senior track and field athlete Craig Colahan, freshman cross-country/track runner Rachel Crawford, junior soccer player JoEllen DeLeon, freshman track and field athlete Alex Green, junior soccer player Brooke Steinberg and junior cross-country/track and field runner Annie Wade were among 118 Great Northwest Athletic Conference athletes selected.

To qualify, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.85.

This marked the third time Colahan and DeLeon received the award, while Ampi earned the honor for a second time.

CHS wrestling golf tournament nears

INDEPENDENCE — The ninth annual Central wrestling four-man scramble golf tournament returns Aug. 15 at Oak Knoll Golf Course.

The tournament begins at 5 p.m. with a shotgun start. Cost is $40 per person, which includes nine holes of golf and a hamburger dinner.

Registration take places at Oak Knoll the day of the event beginning at 4 p.m.

Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Central High wrestling program.

WOU golf tourney delayed to Aug. 18

MONMOUTH — The Western Oregon University football team’s annual golf tournament has moved to Aug. 18. The tournament was originally scheduled for Friday.

No reason was given for the delay.

The event, set for Salem Golf Club, will feature a lunch or dinner, raffle prizes and a scramble-style tournament.

Cost is $125 for singles and $400 for a group of four. Entry fees include a round of golf, door prize and a choice of lunch or dinner.

Cart sponsorships for $25 and hole sponsorships for $300 to $400 are also available.

All proceeds from the tournament benefit the WOU Football Association and will go toward scholarships and program enhancements.
