DALLAS — A Dallas man died Thursday afternoon after a collision with a log truck on Highway 223 about three miles south of Dallas. Stanley Paul Dankenbring, 64, was driving a sport utility vehicle when he collided with a log truck driven by Robert E. Sweet Jr., 49, of Klamath Falls. Sweet and his passenger, Laura Sales, 48, of Klamath Falls, were uninjured. Initial information from the Oregon State Police, the investigating agency, indicate Sweet was driving northbound on Highway 223 between milepost 6 and 7 when the 2000 Ford Explorer driven by Dankenbring crossed the center line and collided nearly head-on with the log truck. All people involved were using seatbelts. Oregon State Police are still investigating the accident. OSP Lt. Steve Mitchell said crash reconstructions can take three to six weeks to determine what the cause was when no criminal charges are involved. Dallas Fire Department, SW?Polk Fire and Polk County Sheriff's Office assisted at the scene. Dallas Fire Chief Fred Hertel said when he arrived, a man and nurse who had happened on the accident were attempting CPR on Dankenbring, but the man was dead when firefighters checked vitals. The Oregon Department of Transportation assisted with detours and helped with the fuel spilled on the road. The highway was closed for nearly four hours.
