Downtown Dallas merchants plan open houses

DALLAS — Want to do some pre-holiday shopping and win a free turkey for your effort?

Head to downtown Dallas Friday and Saturday for an event that has a name that says it all: Dallas Downtown Merchants Holiday Open Houses and Turkey Drawing.

Forty downtown businesses, from A-Team Locksmith to World Gym, will be part of the event taking place during normal operating hours at each establishment.

Event coordinator Linda Taylor, owner of Heartstrings Florist & Artisans, said the idea behind the open houses is to promote shopping locally, just in time for the holiday season.

“We are just trying to generate business in town,” Taylor said. “Everybody goes out of town to shop.”

Taylor said the concept emerged when she and Rachel Greco, owner of Grandma’s Attic Sewing Emporium, talked about hosting open houses at their businesses — both on Southwest Court Street — at the same time. From there it expanded to all Court Street business, and finally to all of downtown.

Open house shoppers can take advantage of special pricing, sales, promotions and refreshments at each stop.

“Merchants can do whatever they want to entertain their customers when they come in,” Taylor said.

In addition to the open houses, each business will hold a drawing for a free turkey. Those interested in entering the drawings need only put their name in the drawing box at the merchants they visit this weekend.

Turkey winners will be announced Monday.

A list of participating businesses will be available at each merchant’s open house and in today’s Itemizer-Observer on Page 16A.
