POLK COUNTY — Highway 51’s intersection with Highway 22 will be closed to most traffic starting Friday morning and running through early Monday morning.
The Oregon Department of Transportation closure is to repair a small sinkhole on the shoulder of Highway 22 at the intersection with Highway 51.
About two feet in diameter now, the sinkhole is threatening to grow and spread to eastbound travel lanes. The sinkhole was caused by the collapse of an underground culvert about 20 feet beneath the road surface, which crews will need to repair.
The following closures and detours will be in place:
• Vehicles traveling eastbound on Highway 22 wanting to turn left will use Oak Grove Road instead of Highway 51.
• Vehicles traveling westbound on Highway 22 wanting to turn right will use Greenwood Road instead of Highway 51.
• Vehicles traveling northbound on Highway 51 wishing to turn left onto Highway 22 will be detoured to Greenwood Road.
• The right lane of Highway 22 eastbound will be closed with only one lane open for eastbound traffic.
The Highway 51 northbound to Highway 22 eastbound ramp will remain open during construction.
Work on the repair will begin at 9 a.m. Friday and finish by 6 a.m. Monday in an effort to avoid peak commuter traffic periods in the area.
