Wolves chosen to place ninth

MONMOUTH — If the preseason prognosticators are correct, it could be a tough season for the Western Oregon University women’s basketball team.

The Wolves have been picked to finish ninth among 10 Great Northwest Athletic Conference teams in the league’s preseason coaches’ poll.

WOU, which finished 6-20 overall and 3-15 in GNAC play (tied for eighth place) in 2013-14, received 21 total points in voting by the league’s coaches. The Wolves, who have just one senior on their roster, have three starters and seven total letterwinners returning, including forward Dana Goularte, and guards Elise Miller and Katie Goddard.

Western Washington received nine of the 10 first-place votes and garnered 81 points in voting to be the clear choice to win the GNAC title. Alaska Anchorage received the only other first-place vote and is picked second.

Western Oregon opens its 2014-15 campaign with an exhibition game against Warner Pacific on Tuesday night.
