Monmouth Fitness to host open house

Monmouth Fitness Club will host an open house Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The club will offer refreshments, door prize drawings and introduce the public to group fitness programs taught by certified group fitness instructors and personal trainers.

Thirty-minute class demonstrations will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will run until 12:30 p.m. Formats include Zumba, spinning, kickboxing and lite fit.

Monmouth Fitness Club is located at 165 E. Main St.

Willamette Art to host fundraiser

The Willamette Art Center is “All Fired Up for Art.” Illuminations is the theme of the center’s inaugural art auction benefit, to be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday at Salem Convention Center’s Santiam Room, 200 Commercial St. SE, Salem.

Proceeds from the event boost the art center’s community programs such as Family Clay Sunday, Empty Bowls, Pottery in the Schools Program, school field trips, scholarships and the Artisans Village at the Oregon State Fair.

Sponsors for the event include the Marion Polk Food Share.

Artists reception at WOU gallery

Western Oregon University and the Cannon Gallery of Art present the artwork of three emerging artists from WOU’s Bachelor of Fine Arts program.

Students Debi Miller (ceramics), Eric Loftin (painting, drawing), and Spencer Miller (printmaking) will exhibit a variety of work completed during the 2014-15 school year.

The exhibit, BFA Thesis Showcase: Beyond The Surface, will be on view at the Cannon Gallery of Art from Tuesday through June 13.

An opening reception for the artists, free and open to the public, will be from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday (today). The artists will be on hand to answer any questions and discuss their work.

This exhibit was made possible through the hard work and dedication of the staff and faculty of the Western Oregon University Art Department.

The Cannon Gallery of Art is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and on weekends by appointment.

YMCA hosts dance recital on Saturday

The Monmouth-Independence YMCA Inspiration Dance Company will perform a dance recital at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday at Central High School Auditorium, 1530 Monmouth St., Independence.

Tickets are $8, or five for $35, and may be purchased at the Y’s front desk from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. until the end of the day on Friday. Tickets may be purchased at the door, but no credit or debit cards will be accepted.

Independence Grill now has live music

Independence Grill beginning will have free live music every Friday and Saturdays beginning Friday.

From 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Patrick Anderson will play light acoustic guitar during the dinner hours. After 9, he moves in to the bar to perform rock, blues and jazz fusion.

The Grill has extended hours, and is now open until midnight.
