Festive ornaments art class feature
Ash Creek Arts Center will host the Second Saturday Family Art Class from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday at its building, 311 S. Monmouth St., Independence.
The class will teach children and their families how to make festive holiday tree ornaments. Children should be old enough to manage scissors, glue, tape and other art supplies. All family art classes are free.
Registration is not required.
WOU’s CAI lecture series returns
Western Oregon University’s Center for Academic Innovation’s Community Lecture Series returns on Tuesday. Rob Winningham, Ph.D., will present on brain health and aging at 5:30 p.m.

Grief workshops offered for families
Willamette Valley Hospice will offer special workshops to help grieving children and adults.
Participants will gain practical ideas and coping strategies to assist them in their grief during the holiday season.
The first workshop will be Tuesday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at West Valley Hospital for adults only.
For adults with children ages five and older, an expanded workshop with age-appropriate activities will be offered on Nov. 14 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Willamette Valley Hospice office, at 1015 Third St. NW in Salem.
Anyone that has faced loss is welcome, but registration is requested by calling 503-588-3600.
Meet and greet with WOU students
Monmouth Senior Center will host a meet and greet with students from Western Oregon University’s social ties and aging class at 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Students will talk with seniors about where they get their social support, friendship and other topics.

Rep. Paul Evans to discuss veterans
Rep. Paul Evans will host a series of speeches to commemorate Veteran’s Day.
The presentations will highlight some of the challenges facing the 21st century veteran and ways the public can honor and assist citizen-soldiers.
Evans will speak at 6 p.m. at the Independence Elks Lodge on Wednesday (today).
“We owe our veterans a huge debt of gratitude,” Evans said, who is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and Oregon Air National Guard.

Senior center hosts veterans breakfast
The Monmouth Senior Center will host a free breakfast for veterans and their families on Wednesday (today) from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. at the center, 180 S. Warren St., Monmouth.
The event is also sponsored by the Disabled American Veterans and the AmVets 1776 Ladies Auxiliary. The community is welcome to attend.
A 100-year-old German doll will be raffled off, with proceeds going to the Wounded Warrior Project.

Swing your partner at Guthrie Park
Guthrie Park Community Center will host its monthly second Saturday Old Time Square Dance from 7 to 10 p.m. on Saturday at the center, 4320 Kings Valley Highway (Highway 223), at the corner of Cooper Hollow Road.
No experience is necessary as all dances will be taught, including old time squares, big circles, longway sets and waltzes. Live music will be by Cash & Company. The caller will be Truman Price.
All ages are welcome. Admission is $5 per person or $15 for a family of four or more. Children younger than 12 are free.

Annual art, quilt show starts Friday
The 24th annual Coastal Hills Art Tour and Quilt Show will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday at various locations in Willamina.
This year, more than 20 artists and crafters from the West Valley will have items for sale. The Coastal Hills Quilters will put on their 16th annual quilt show. Admission is free.
Maps showing the locations will be available at the fire station and the VFW on the north side of town.

Ducks or Beavers afghan at library
The Friends of the Independence Public Library will host a raffle of a University of Oregon Ducks afghan, beanies and a stuffed critter, or an Oregon State University Beavers set.
Raffle tickets are $1. Proceeds go to the Friends of the Independence Public Library. The drawing will be on Nov. 20 at 5 p.m.

Salt Creek group to meet Tuesday
The Salt Creek Neighborhood Association will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Salt Creek Baptist Church, 15075 Salt Creek Road, Dallas.
All area residents are welcome to the general meeting. The Polk County Sheriff’s Office will present information on the neighborhood watch program. The Oregon Department of Forestry will speak about wildfire prevention.

Library holds Soup Night, author talk
Dallas Public Library is hosting Soup Night Thursday at 6 p.m., with guest author Maggie Stuckey.
Everyone is invited to sample soups and learn about how “Soup Nights” have become a new way to bring neighbors and communities together.
An Oregon author, Stuckey will share stories of Soup Night groups all across the country with tips on starting your own Soup Night. She will also talk about how she developed the concept for her book “Soup Night: Recipes for Creating Community Around a Pot of Soup,” her two other books, and how she found the perfect publishers.
Pentacle opens ‘Trip to Bountiful’
Pentacle Theatre in West Salem is running “The Trip to Bountiful” starting Friday and running through Dec. 5.
Written by Horton Foote and directed by Jo Dodge, the play centers around Mrs. Watts, an aging widow living with her son and daughter-in-law in three-room flat in Houston. Fearing her presence may be an imposition, she dreams of returning to her home town, Bountiful.
